He tragically lost his parents during the Holocaust and, as the youngest survivor of the Buchenwald concentration camp, immigrated to Israel at the tender age of eight. Ordained as a rabbi in 1960, he served as the Chief Rabbi of Netanya, in 1988 he was elected to serve as Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv - Jaffa and in 1993 Chief Rabbi of the State of Israel, serving for ten years.
